The Cybils 2018: Children's and YA Bloggers' Literary Awards (with a Chicken Nugget GIVEAWAY!)

It's the most wonderful time of the year: the kids are back in school, settled and happy; you can get pumpkin spice everything (though admittedly, this goes too far); it is even rumored that in some places the air is crisp and cool.

But even more importantly (tiny drumroll in your head, please):

IT IS CYBILS NOMINATION TIME!

Branching Out: Middle Grade and Young Adult Reads

For a couple of years now, I've focused Pickle Corn Jam on picture books. Picture books are (primarily) what I write, and with a five year old, picture books are (primarily) what I read. I've even been toying with getting this shirt, because it's so, so true: picture books are my jam. And I'll never give 'em up.

But now that the little is getting not-so-little, and now that I've decided to revive some of my older manuscripts that (gasp!) aren't picture books, I've been doing a lot more reading of books for the middle grade and young adult set. And guys! There is some truly fantastic stuff out there.

I want to read it (all of it) and recommend it (most of it) and share it with you (as much as humanly possible). So, (cue trumpets!) Pickle Corn Jam is growing up! Branching out! Getting even bigger and better!

In true Pickle Corn Jam fashion, we'll be kicking it off with...a shrubbery a giveaway!

How do you win? Get entered by subscribing (subscriber LOVE = all subscribers get entered for every PCJ blog contest, ever) OR by leaving me a comment about a recently published middle grade or young adult novel (or picture book, because picture books, y'all) that is your current fave by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2017! Simple, right?

What could you win? This is the BEST part. There are THREE prizes, perfectly themed for Halloween (fairies, Bigfoot, ghosts, oh my)! (plus a bonus prize that will be given away on Instagram...are you following me yet?)

THE PRIZES!
(THREE winners will each receive ONE of the following)
CONGRATULATIONS TRISTA, ELLEN AND LINDSEY! I'll contact each of you via email!

The Changelings
by Christina Soontornvat

"Readers will enjoy the balance among action scenes, quieter periods of character interaction, and rich descriptions of Faerie...The concept of the Changelings-and why they're important to keeping Faerie and Earth connected-is explained in bits with an enticing air of mystery that will keep readers engaged, and an additional final surprise puts the remaining pieces in place." - School Library Journal
Age Range 10-14 years
Uncertain Summer
by Jessica Lee Anderson

"For every kid who has ever dreamed of doing something big, who has mourned friendships past, who has known with all their heart that they can make a difference...Uncertain Summer is an absolute must!" P.J. Hoover, author, Tut: The Story of My Immortal Life
Age Range 9-12 years

A Properly Unhaunted Place
by William Alexander

"This novel explores the very idea of books, the purpose of libraries and the rather large theme of why the present must embrace a relationship with the past. It reminds us that if we are not brave enough to live alongside the haunting past, then we risk becoming nothing more than ghosts, haunting the earth but never inhabiting it." - New York Times (read full review, here)
Age Range 8-12 years

Bonus Prize (ONLY ON INSTAGRAM!)

Book of Bones (10 Record-Breaking Animals)
by Gabrielle Balkan and Sam Brewster

Ten record-breaking animal bones are introduced through a series of superlatives set up as a guessing game with clues. Readers examine animals' skeletons and guess to whom they belong; the answers are revealed in vibrant, full-color scenic habitats, with easily understood - and humorous - explanations.
"Gives both casual browsers and budding naturalists plenty to gnaw on...A rib-tickling gallery." - Kirkus Reviews
Age Range 4-9 years (Pre-K to Grade 4)

(Entries must be received by 11:59 PM, Central Time, Wednesday, October 18, 2017)

The Well Read Guess is BACK (and BETTER THAN EVER)!

Encourage reading...by not reading! (plus a GIVEAWAY!)

One of my most popular posts by far was this one, a blog post about encouraging reading in reluctant pre-readers. I absolutely LOVE that this post was so popular, and I really hope that the list has helped readers of my blog find a book (or two, or ten!) to help encourage their littles toward a fondness for reading.

But like I said in that post, I definitely understand that not all kids enjoy reading. So, with that in mind, I've put together a list of ways to encourage your kiddos to read, without actually reading. And while that sounds really strange, I am a big fan of doing whatever it takes to get kids engaged in books. Even if that means not reading. :)

EMILY ARROW
How can there be so much adorableness packaged up in one person? It should be impossible. Except it isn't, apparently, because we have Exhibit A, Emily Arrow. What does Emily do? She adapts children's books into songs. But in a way that you've never heard before. It's not Peter, Paul and Mary style, where all of the words in the story are sung (although this Peter, Paul and Mary book IS popular at our house), and it isn't nursery rhymes. It's actual current, popular children's books adapted into song. And she has a YouTube channel. And she adapted my favorite children's book of all time (and was the 2015 Winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for it). AND one lucky reader is going to win a copy of Emily's 2016 album, STORYTIME SINGALONG, VOLUME 1. Just leave me a comment on this post by September 26, 2016 (EXTENDED!) September 30, 2016 to enter (or subscribe to email updates)!

ONE MORE STORY APP/WEBSITE
From their site: "One More Story is the online library of the best of children's illustrated books set to music and read aloud to you. Follow Benjamin D. Bookworm, Bendy, through your favorite books, or try the I Can Read It mode to read them yourself." I had some difficulty finding apps that would read aloud to my daughter when I looked; most of the apps out there are either to help kids read on their own (which although admirable, wasn't necessarily what I was going for at age 3) or didn't include any of the more popular titles or authors that we would find in the library or bookstore. While One More Story isn't free (around $50/year), it is a great app that my own little asks for again and again.

BOOK TO TV/MOVIE/THEATER ADAPTATIONS
Introducing a character via television/movie FIRST can be a fun way to sneak in a little literary magic. If yours are anything like mine, once your little is hooked on a character, they'll want everything they can see/touch/taste/hear to be about said character. So, make the characters literary! Some great options: Julia Donaldson's THE GRUFFALO, Janell Cannon's STELLALUNA, Marie-Louise Gay's STELLA and SAM series, Kate and Jim McMullan's I STINK and I'M DIRTY via Amazon's new series, THE STINKY AND DIRTY SHOW, and (hopefully soon!) Mary Pope Osborne's THE MAGIC TREE HOUSE series. Finding characters at the theater is especially fun, too! There is SO much great children's theater based on kid lit. Two of our favorite stage adaptations: (again) Julia Donaldson's ROOM ON THE BROOM and Mo Willems' ELEPHANT AND PIGGIE'S "We Are In a Play."

FIND BOOK CHARACTERS BROUGHT TO LIFE
Artists all over the world have brought storybook characters to life via sculpture. Visit Robert McCloskey's ducklings (of MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS fame) in Boston's Public Garden, the winged monkeys of L. Frank Baum's THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ in Burlington, Vermont, or seventeen different characters in the Storybook Capital of Texas: Abilene (including Dr. Seuss's Horton).

BOOKS THAT INCLUDE SONGS
Sneak in a song from a book between repeat encores of "Let It Go," and you might pique their curiosity! Eric Litwin has some fun choices, both in the Pete the Cat series and his newer series, The Nuts.

And while this is a total cheat to include on this list, you have to learn the Happy Llama, Sad Llama song (complete with hand gestures) if you are going to read ANY of the Llama Llama books by beloved Anna Dewdney.

I'd love to hear if you have any other ideas for encouraging reading by not reading!

Happy (non?) reading!

Let's Raise Books! (a Pop Up Birthday Book-raiser)

Every once in a while you come across an organization or group that is doing such amazing things that they make YOU feel inspired and ready to take on the world. Pop-Up Birthday is that organization for me right now.

Pop-Up Birthday's Mission:
"To provide birthday celebrations to children in foster care and create a moment of connection between the child and their caregiver.  We believe that something as simple as a birthday party has the power to provide normalcy, joy and hope in a foster child’s life."

They do something so simple, yet so powerful! What a fun and special way to make an impact in the lives of children who (unfortunately) really need to be reminded how amazing and beautiful the world can really be.

Pop-Up Birthday provides "a plastic tote filled to the brim with complete party supplies, including theme decorations, paper goods, games/craft, cake, candles, balloons, goody bags, a personalized card and gifts for the foster child." Because Laila Scott (the founder of this goodness) understands the value of books in the lives of children, each box also includes a new book. This pretty much hits upon every single thing that I love and that is good in this world (and I know there are others of you just like me out there!): BOOKS, GIFT GIVING, PAPER GOODS (giftwrap, cards and party supplies galore!), PARTY PLANNING, HELPING KIDS IN NEED, HELPING FOSTER CARE KIDDOS...so much goodness!

As you can see, I am in love.

So, to help support Pop-Up Birthday in the best way I know how, I am raising books! Want to help?

What I'm Raising: New children's books (picture book to YA)

To donate before September 21, 2016, go HERE and pledge the number of books you are donating (1 to infinity!). My 4th and 16th pledges will receive an INSTANT WIN PRIZE (a $25 AMAZON GIFT CARD). Plus, I will match your book pledges, up to the first 20 books. To donate after September 21, 2016, simply leave me a comment on this post so we know to look for your donation!

Once you've pledged, you can either mail the book directly to me (PM me on Facebook for my physical address), or send them directly to Pop-Up Birthday!

I hope you'll come join me and take part in this book-drive for a great cause. And, if you want to volunteer or put together a box of your own, I know they would love to have your help!

Happy Reading!

The Well Read Review: Mary Had a Little Glam (with a Giveaway!)

Mary Had a Little Glam
Tammi Sauer (Author), Vanessa Brantley Newton (Illustrator)
Sterling Children's Books
Amazon
IndieBound

If you don't already own any Tammi Sauer books, just go ahead and run right out and buy one. Or four. Or twelve. You'll have lots to choose from (since she's sold like a gazillion books, aka 23), but if you can't decide, start with Mary Had a Little Glam...(and Nugget and Fang, because, Nugget. And Fang.)

I'll wait.

Just kidding. You can finish reading this before you go buy them.

Mary Had a Little Glam is a rhyming tale loosely based on Mary Had a Little Lamb, but while this Mary does have a little lamb, it comes in the form of a wonderful accessory (a lamb shaped purse), not a baa-d animal.

Sauer and Newton's Mary is appealing on several levels. She is, obviously, quite glamorous. She's creative and inventive (making curtains into dresses, finding glamour in natural objects like bird nests). But more than that, she is compassionate. She helps her friends - who you might recognize from other nursery rhymes - find their glam in a way that makes them happy and comfortable. When her fun makeovers meet an obstacle in the form of playground equipment, she doesn't abandon her dream of making the world more glamorous, throw her hands in the air and give up, or expect everyone to be happy with just being how she wants them to be. She leads the charge into giving up just enough "glamour" to happily play, exchanging her glamorous duds for a little less sparkle and a little more mud.

But even as she is losing her accessories, we needn't worry about Mary's glamour. Mary has true glamour, "the attractive or exciting quality that makes certain people or things seem appealing or special," not because of her shiny necklaces and fuzzy boas, but because of her personality.

Newton's illustrations are also quite refreshing. In a world where we, very unfortunately, have to have a hashtag and a movement to try to come up with a list of more than a handful of books that feature diverse characters, Newton has delivered a book filled with illustrations representative of the world we live in. As they should.

So back to going out to buy Tammi Sauer's (and for that matter, Vanessa Newton's!) books: while I really, truly encourage you to do so, I also really, truly encourage you to enter to win a copy of Mary Had a Little Glam, too. :)

How do you do that? Use the entry form below, and either tweet Get Your Glam On! with a picture of your own little "Mary" all glammed up with #MaryHadALittleGlam, and/or subscribe to follow Pickle Corn Jam via email. (MAKE SURE TO USE THE ENTRY FORM REGARDLESS OF YOUR METHOD OF ENTRY, OR YOU MAY NOT BE ENTERED!) Good luck!

The Well Read Review: Mira Forecasts the Future (with a GIVEAWAY!)

Mira Forecasts the Future
Kell Andrews (Author), Lissy Marlin (Illustrator)
Sterling Children's Books
Amazon | Barnes and Noble | BookPeople | IndieBound

I've started and restarted this review a dozen or so times. Not because reviewing Mira Forecasts the Future is difficult, and not because my daughter was "negotiating" about not wanting to nap the entire time I was writing it (alright, maybe that did happen...), but because I was startled and disappointed to read another review that claimed it was just a "marginal choice" a couple of weeks ago when I decided to purchase it. Why was it a "marginal choice" according to that review? Because the visuals were "uneven": the illustrations show people in the bright and colorful garb of the 1920's flapper era, despite references to SPF 100, a surfing contest and a female lifeguard named Taylor in the text.

Really?

COME ON.

How about we focus on what this book did right? Because it did SO. MUCH. RIGHT.

It is attention grabbing for the three to eight year old set, with a fortune teller, a seaside town with a carnival boardwalk, bright, colorful windsocks and pinwheels (which, I promise, are right up there with bubbles in fascination-factor), surfers and lifeguards and beaches.
It offers non-overbearing lessons on science - both meteorology AND scientific method (observation/measurement/experiment).
It is the story of a little girl who decides - all on her own - to use SCIENCE to make her dreams come true after RESEARCHING AT THE LIBRARY. It also never discounts magic or other belief systems.
It is the story of a little girl who has the full support of her mother, despite obviously long hours at the boardwalk's fortune telling stand.
It is the story of a little girl who dreams big and wins over an entire town's adult population.
It is a story illustrated with DIVERSE characters adorned with fun and festive attire that brings a colorful twist (and a nod to history) to the tale.
It is a fresh and unique story that has never (to my knowledge) been done. And that is a very hard task to accomplish.

Does anyone really care if "SPF" and professional surfing contests didn't really happen until the 1970s in our world (though both sunblock and surfing contests did actually exist in the 1920s and 30s)? Or if "Taylor" wasn't a popular or common name for a female (though, of note, author Taylor Caldwell was born in 1900 and was a woman)? And which is more distracting or hard to follow: a fortune teller working in a boardwalk stand wearing "stereotypically exotic garb, even when she’s off duty" or a mother who works as a fortune teller who is suddenly in normal street wear? I do feel it is important to note that when she is in the library, supporting her daughter, she is wearing "off-duty" clothes, turning her "garb" into a headband, a shawl and gold jewelry; I am fairly certain I could find a picture of a well-dressed woman of 2016 wearing a very similar outfit. Perhaps the festive, colorful, bright and non-typical flapper-esque garb used in the rest of the illustrations was purposefully included to help downplay the "stereotypically exotic garb" of Madame Mirabella?

While some people might agree with the other review, I can say I wholeheartedly disagree. I hope you'll give Mira Forecasts the Future a chance, and I hope that you love it as much as our family has. Scarves off to Kell Andrews and Lissy Marlin on this debut - can't wait for your next one.

AND, to show how much we love this book (in honor of my 50th post on Pickle Corn Jam), I'd love to give away a copy to one lucky reader. Simply leave me a comment below by next Friday, June 17, 2016, to be entered.
